I was in China in 2003, and 2005.  I didn't feel any denial of civil
liberties.  I was free to go anywhere I wanted to go, and say anything
I wanted to say.  On the freeways, it was very much like in the U.S.
except the freeway signs were oval shapes.  Buses have TV programs
running and a hostess to pass out bottled water to anyone who wants
it.  The only place where we had to pass checkpoints were the borders
between Hong Kong and China and Macau.  Otherwise, you hardly see a
policeman around, except ones on the street directing traffics.  You'd
see more policemen in Hong Kong or Macau.

I can't remember where it was, but there was a bank that had a PC
outside the front door.  I was using it to check my emails and stock
quotes when a young lady stopped next to me.  I asked her if she
wanted to use it, and she said she didn't know how to use this modern
thing.
