It's unlikely the US will be engaged in military combat for too much
loner. 
As to whether there are bases, in the long term, I think most are not 
thinking about that.  In fact, you give  red herrings like Germany.
Everyone 
knows about the Iron Curtain, and that everyone wanted to be defended 
against the oppression, tyranny, poverty, on the Soviet side, and that
much 
of Europe could not defend their free existence at the end of WW2. As far
as 
South Korea, I wish I could introduce you to my older friend who fought
for 
the freedom of his country, South Korea, against the Chinese invaders.
China 
made certain demands about Japan, after WW2.
